Blood Is Safe

The US Blood Supply is safer than ever [1]. The FDA and the nation’s blood centers utilize 5 layers of safety to ensure that patients who receive a blood transfusion are protected. This includes overlapping safeguards in the following areas:

  • Donor screening
  • Blood testing
  • Donor deferral list
  • Quarantine
  • Monitoring Problems and Deficiencies [2]

Blood Is Unique.

Blood is critical for life. It must come from living donors and cannot be made artificially. There is no substitute for blood. One in 7 patients entering the hospital needs blood [1] and blood is used every two seconds in the US [2].
